Captain Democracy is a combination of political interest, snark, and my increasing fascination with the creative potential of Artificial Intelligence. I have wanted to be a comic book artist for many years, but I can’t draw a stick figure to save my life. In collaboration with ChatGPT, however, I have found that AI can help me with the drawing that I cannot do, while I can help AI with the satire that it cannot understand.
Captain Democracy was designed to provide satirical commentary on our contemporary political situation—not on the foibles of one side or the other, but the way that we talk to each other and carry on political debate. Captain Democracy represents the way that I see democracy: a well-meaning but often ineffective figure who chooses noble battles, wins occasionally, loses frequently, and can’t quite overcome human nature most of the time.
Captain Democracy is socially awkward, sanctimonious, overconfident, idealistic, out of shape, and in many ways ridiculous. But he also represents our best hope of living together peacefully and making meaningful changes to our society—just like democracy itself.
And the Captain Democracy comic strip is and will always be free. No subscription fees. No advertisements. No catches. I would love for people to read this little hobby of mine. I do not see it as a way to make money. (Nor am I vain enough to think it would). I see it as a way to say things that need to be said—and to have some fun along the way.
